Bridge and Tunnel Inspection

Steel structures such as Bridges and Tunnel supports require periodic inspection using a wide range of technologies. Sonatest Ultrasonic Flaw Detectors or Phased Array equipment are often used for the inspection of steel members, welded joints and support pins in such applications.

Corrosion, cracking and other damage can all affect a bridge's load carrying capacity. Therefore, all of the elements that directly affect performance of the bridge including the footing, substructure, deck, and superstructure must be periodically inspected or monitored.

Fatigue cracking and corrosion will become increasingly important considerations as we go beyond the 75 -80 year life expectancy of a bridge and standard visual inspections will not be enough. To maintain such structure into extanded life the increased use of NDT is required to obtain assurances of reliability for these structures. NDE techniques such as Magnetic Particle Inspection and ultrasonic inspection, using digital flaw detectors such as the D+ Series or the Sitescan Series;  Phased Array equipment, such as the Veo, are being used to a greater extent.
