In response to the growing demand for energy and the global concern about climate change there has been rapid growth in the development of renewable energy resources. Alongside the progress of large hydro-electric projects, the fast development of the Wind Turbine market has now taken hold, both on and offshore. Europe dominates in this area with the leading countries being Denmark, Germany, Spain and the UK. Markets are now growing for wind turbines in the USA and China. Ultrasonic NDT inspection is crucial in this arena both during the manufacturing process and in-service; focussing on the turbine towers and composite blades. Wave and tidal power are also now at a stage where developments in power generation are beginning to produce significant results and due to the harsh operational environments these will require NDT solutions.

Wind turbine towers are constructed of welded steel, a typical tower can contain over 200 metres of critical welds. These are inspected manually using flaw detectors, such as the Sitescan 250, or semi-automated solutions can be achieved with Phased Array or ToFD, using the Veo 16:64.
