Magnetic particle inspection (MPI) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) process for detecting surface and near surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials such as iron, nickel, cobalt, and some of their alloys. Dye Penetrant Testing is a widely used and low-cost inspection method used to locate surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics).
Leakage is detected by use of fine ferromagnetic particles applied to the test piece surface. The magnetically charged particles form an outline of the "discontinuity" and will then show Location, Size and Shape. These particles may be dry or in a wet suspension - such as the SonaMag Range.
The SonaPen dye penetrant range can be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials and is used to detect casting, forging and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks,suface porosities, fatigue cracks on in-service components amongst many other applications.
